Helping You Find A Pathway Of Hope, Healing, And New Life.

“You Say” by Lauren Daigle

This song is one that I find to be very powerful.  She is a Christian artist. I was surprised when I heard this song being played on a secular radio station.  As I listen to this song I think about how much it not only applies to my life but how much it could apply to everyone’s life in one way or another.  So, let’s dive into the lyrics together and break it down. I hope this song can help you in some way.

I keep fighting voices in my mind that say I’m not enough
Every single lie that tells me I will never measure up
Am I more than just the sum of every high and every low?
Remind me once again just who I am, because I need to know (ooh oh)

Sometimes depression, guilt, shame, and loneliness can produce these internal “voices” in our heads that tear us down.  Before we know it we begin to believe these lies about our selves. You are worthless, you are ugly, and you are stupid.  When we hear these things it is easy to believe them. BUT these words are just that, they are words. They are not who we are.  They are the lies that are being told to us. So, if we are not worthless, ugly and stupid, what are we? Would you believe me if I said you were loved, worthy, beautiful and smart?

You say I am loved when I can’t feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
You say I am held when I am falling short
When I don’t belong, oh You say that I am Yours
And I believe (I), oh I believe (I)
What You say of me (I)
I believe

You are not alone!  It is okay if you don’t believe me.  Many people can’t believe these things when all they have been told are lies.  Do you think you would be able to let yourself begin to believe? Believe that you are worthy when you feel worthless?  Believe that you are beautiful when you feel ugly? Believe that you are smart when you feel stupid? Can you begin to challenge these thoughts? Can you start to believe?

The only thing that matters now is everything You think of me
In You, I find my worth, in You I find my identity, (ooh oh)

In this song the “You” she is referring to is God.  If you do not believe in God, where do you find your identity and worth?  For some people it is God, religion, family, spouse, culture, values, the list can go on.  If the person, place or thing that you find your identity in is causing you to think and believe negatively about yourself, that is the thing that needs to change.  You are meant to be valued and treasured.

If this song resonated with you in any way I encourage you to talk about it with someone.  If not a friend or loved one, please feel free to contact us here at New Hope. This stuff is difficult to deal with on a daily basis and you are not alone.  If you can’t even find a little bit of belief that you are worthy, beautiful and smart, talk to someone. Let them or us here at New Hope help you find your worth.  I don’t even know you, but I know that you are someone special.

I encourage you to listen to the whole song and, if you can, grab a pen and paper and write down some things as you listen.

How does this song make you feel?

Why do you feel that way?

What do you believe?

What don’t you believe?

Can you ever believe?

How can you believe?

I challenge you to listen to the song a few times.  Look at the lyrics and sing along.

How does it feel to say those words?

Try it!  Believe it!
